DISTRESS CENTRE DURHAM VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at Distress Centre Durham. This section of our website will give you all the information you need on becoming a volunteer. Please be sure to read through this entire section before submitting your application. For your convenience, we have an online application form that you can submit easily and it is completely confidential.

You may click the buttons on the left side tool bar to view individual pages of this section, or you may click the “Next Page….” button located on the bottom of each page, to view this section in order.

Included in this section you will find:

  • Position Description of Volunteer Helpline Worker
  • Volunteer Helpline Worker Screening Criteria Policy
  • Volunteer Helpline Worker Certification Policy
  • Training Date Schedule
  • Registration Fee Policy
  • Listening Quiz – Do you really listen?
  • Volunteer Application Form

Once we receive your completed application form, we will call you to set up a telephone interview. This will give us both an opportunity to explore whether this is, in fact, the volunteer placement best suited for you. If appropriate, you will be registered for our next Basic Training Workshop, which will be two days long.

Our volunteers become fully-trained helpline workers after receiving certification in both the 17 hour Basic and the Advanced {3 months later} Training Workshops When you have completed 4 supervised shifts, you will then be able to work on the phones with a partner or you may want to work the phones on your own, out of our confidential Whitby location.

We appreciate and thank you for your interest in the Distress Centre and your support of our programs and services.

The opportunity to save a life can change your life!
